Rwanda celebrates National Water Week

Rulindo, 17th March, 2014-The National Water week kicked off from the 16th to 22nd March, 2014 to prepare the World Water Day that is held annually on the 22nd March to highlight the importance of freshwater and sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year World Water Day celebrations will take place on 20th March, 2014.

The National water week was officiated by Honorable Minister of State in charge of energy and water, Eng. Emma. F. Isumbingabo who inaugurated community standardized water supply system in Kijabagwe cell, Shyorongi sector at an event that was held at Kijabagwe secondary school. The Minister of State called for the continued support, collaboration and regular maintenance of the water systems with a sense of ownership and sustainability.

The water systems that were inaugurated cover Shyorongi, Burega, Ntabana and Kisaro sectors with the length of 130 kilometers that will supply safe and clean water to 60778 households.

The implementation of the water supply projects was supported by Water for people, a Non-profit organization (NGO) with its headquarters in the Denver Colorado-United States of America, mandated to support water and sanitation in 11 countries in Africa, Rwanda inclusive.

Water for people worked through a close partnership with Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA), and Rulindo District through Rulindo Challenge program. EWSA on behalf of the Government of Rwanda contributes 30%, Rulindo District 15% and Water for people 55% of the capital investment.

Currently, we are covering 74% in water supply and the Ministry of Infrastructure is pleading a continued support to reach the target of 100% coverage of water supply to promote sustainable water solutions in schools and health clinics. “Minister said”

The Mayor of Rulindo District, Mr. Justus Kangwage thanked all development partners: Water for people, EWSA, MININFRA and Rulindo residents for the great work done towards the success and implementation of the project. “I promise together we will contribute a lot towards sustainable access to safe water for domestic use and proper sanitation in Rulindo by 2017”.Mayor revealed

Water for life, Rulindo District and MININFRA through EWSA have plans of extending water supply systems to Ngoma, Buyoga, Mbogo, Bushoki, Rusiga, Cyungo, Base, Kinihira and many other areas to ensure 100% coverage in Rulindo District.
