Rwanda celebrates World Water Day

Kigali, 22nd March 2016- Rwanda joined the World to celebrate the World Water Day under the theme “Water and Jobs”.


The Government of Rwanda is determined to investing in sustainable infrastructure to ensure access to water and sanitation for all to eradicate epidemic diseases caused by unclean water especially to the unprivileged ones.
The event brought together academics, policy makers and practitioners to discuss water monitoring and management, how to boost investment in the water sector and encourage job creation to the community.


In his opening remarks, Hon. Dr Vincent Biruta, Minister of Natural Resources highlighted that “the year’s World Water Day is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of water for sustainable development, job creation and transformation of people’s lives not only in Rwanda but also worldwide.


There are enormous investment opportunities in the water sector. It is an area where the private sector can invest for both business and the community benefits. Rwanda is under-utilising its water resources and the private sector has an important role in creating jobs and contributing to our green growth ambitions”. He added.


In the Rwandan context, water plays a central part in the achievement of the EDPRS II targets. Water and Land management is considered as a cross cutting theme which act as an enabler of economic sectors towards achieving economic growth and ultimately reducing poverty.


Currently, 84.8% of Rwandan population have access to clean water and the Government is committed to reach 100% by 2017/2018.



In order to meet all national development goals set, Rwanda through National Water Resources Management Policy, has adopted the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) to ensure proper management of its water and the sustainability of its water, energy, and food securities
