Inyenyeri launches its improved cooking stove System to reduce 50% of Biomass Usage in Rwanda

Ex-combatants in Nyarugunga Cell received Inyenyeri improved cook stoves

Kigali, July 28th, 2017- Inyenyeri, in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ministry of Defense, officially launched the clean Fuel + Stove System in Nyarugunga Ex Combatants Village,Nyarugunga Sector, Kicukiro District.

The event was officiated by the Managing Director, Energy Development Cooperation Limited (EDCL) Mr. Emmanuel KAMANZI on behalf of the Minister of Infrastructure Honorable James MUSONI in accompaniment of the Commissioner from Rwanda Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (RDRC) in charge of Kigali City, Brig. Gen. John Peter BAGABO, Kickuiro District’s Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs Mrs. Angelique MUKUNDE and Inyenyeri Rwanda Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Eric REYNOLDS.

The stoves were given to Rwanda Defense Forces Ex-Combatants (War Veterans) to change their lives by stopping charcoal usage that is expensive, harmful to their health and time wasting and hardly to cook with.

According to MD KAMANZI, the Ministry of Infrastructure is proactively addressing the concern regarding biomass usage by 50% by 2020 by ensuring that Rwanda’s households have access to technologies that are sustainable, cost- effective, environmental friendly and facilitate both the end users and increase private sector participation in the provision of these solutions.

In alignment with the Ministry of Infrastructure’s 2020 goal to reduce the use of biomass by 50%, Inyenyeri, a Rwandan fuel-utility company, has developed a “Made in Rwanda” cooking system that reduces the amount of wood needed to cook with by 80-90%.

In addition to reducing biomass from cooking, the system reduces negative health effects from cooking, leads to substantial time savings, and contributes to the local economy by creating and exporting Carbon Credits.

Eric Reynolds, Inyeneyeri Rwanda CEO, clarifies that with the support of the Government of Rwanda, Inyenyeri is committed to scale up quickly and serve 150,000 households in Rwanda by 2020. “Our longer term goal is to reach over 2 million households in the period of 5 years across Rwanda with modern and clean cooking system. He noted”

The campaign will continue to Gasabo and Nyarugenege Districts as a kick-off of the Country wide campaign targeting vulnerable groups first and other clients in future. The Inyenyeri cook stove is worth 100 USD but will be free of charge in Rwanda in bid to reduce biomass and charcoal usage.
