Kigali,26th August,2015-The Ministry of Infrastructure is announced the signing ceremony of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Concession Agreements for 22 Micro Hydropower Plants whereby 15 are under leasing and 7 Green Fields.
According to the Minister of Infrastructure, Honorable James MUSONI, Agreements signed today will expire after 25years after which they will be transferred to the Government.
Investors have an obligation to optimize the production of those under leasing by either upgrading or rehabilitating them according to the agreements.
Government of Rwanda through Ministry of infrastructure will sign Concession Agreements and the Rwanda Energy group will sign PPAs with Private Developers. Investors/Developers include foreign and local companies.
These efforts are in line with Rwanda’s Energy Policy priorities to;
· Promote value-for-money and increased market competition in energy development;
· Promote private operation of government owned power plants and
· Promote private sector participation
We believe that with private operation, these plants under leasing will produce more power than they are generating today and will Increase efficiency leading to clear management of National energy resources in our Country. Hon.Minister added.
The Ministry of Infrastructure is committed towards harnessing the State’s abundant hydroelectricity resources in a sustainable manner, compliant with GoR law and guided by best practices.
The 22 Micro Hydropower Plants will add 24.6 MW to the National grid, in addition to the current installed capacity of 160 MW. Below is the list of Micro Hydro Power Plants both leased and green fields.
