Kanyonyomba Water Treatment Plant and Water Supply System to reduce water challenges in Bugesera District

Kanyonyomba Water Treatment Plant and Water Supply System in Bugesera District with a production capacity of 5,000m³/day

Kigali, 18 December 2018- Minister of Infrastructure, Amb. Claver Gatete reiterated the support of the Government of Rwanda in addressing water supply issues affecting Bugesera District in particular and Eastern Province in general.

 

Minister Gatete made this emphasis during a site visit last Saturday at Kanyonyomba Water Treatment Plant and water supply to assess the progress of construction of this facility.

Kanyonyomba Water Treatment Plant and Water Supply System is being constructed in Gashora Sector, Bugesera District, Eastern Provincewith a production capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day.

 

Minister Gatete appreciated the current significant status of a 4.5 billion Rwandan francs facility which is expected to serve 90,000 residents of two sectors of Bugesera District, seven Schools, cell offices, trade centres, market places and Bugesera industrial Park.

As Rwanda has set target to achieve 30% of urbanization rate and universal access to water supply and sanitation services by the year 2024, Minister Gatete commended sustainable water infrastructure projects in transforming people’s life.

Eng. Muzola Aimé, the Chief Executive Officer of Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) explained that The overall progress of construction works of the Water Plant is at 98% and the plant is currently supplying water in different areas of Bugesera District including Gako, Rweru and a part of Gashora Sector.”.

 

He also noted that the extension works from Ramiro to Riziyeri are planned to be completed by June 2019 as ways to reinforce the supply of drinking water of Nyamata Town and its surroundings.

 

After the completion of above-mentioned works, the expected daily distribution plan will be 1,500 m3for Gashora and Rweru areas and 3,500m3 for Nyamata town.         

           

Highlighting the impact of the Water Plant, Eng. Aime MUZOLA said “As we wait for Kigali Bulk Water supply (40,000 cubic meter) to come on board by May 2020, Kanyonyomba Water Treatment Plant and Water Supply System will be reducing the water stress in Bugesera District” adding that similar projects are planned to be put in place on lakes Mugesera, Sake, Muhazi and Ngoma River in Nyagatare District to fully improve and come up with adequate solutions against water problems in Eastern Province.
