Kigali, 4^thJanuary 2017 - Works for the expansion of Kigali city roads kicked off.

The roads expansion project was scheduled to have started way back covering a cumulative length of 54 kilometers of different road sections distributed in the 3 city Districts of Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge.

The main sections considered to start immediately are Nyabugogo-City main roundabout and Rwandex-Prince house expected to be expanded to dual carriage ways. Many other small sections will be covered in due course along with the above major sections and will improve and connect incomplete links of places to maximize connectivity and mobility of city duelers.

The origin of the 54km project is in line with the Government strategy to eliminate congestion and manage pollution at the same time improve the ridding quality of roads in the Country in general and on a specific note  focus on traffic related pollution to save lives of people along the congested sections.

The project is implemented by the city of Kigali through the Chinese contractor, CHINA ROAD AND BRIDGE CORPORATION and supervised by HYCOGEC a local firm with proven expertise in road project management; at estimated cost of $76 million USD

Worth to note is that all private property have been compensated dully by the Government of Rwanda at 4 Billion Rwanda francs and relocation has steadily started to pave way for smooth and timely contractor operations.

The present traffic flow status along most of the planned sections is worrying especially at peak hours where traffic jam is tense reducing travel time and increasing cost of travel.

The anticipated impact after completion will be that the public transport bus trips will be increased and the present passenger demands at bus stops will significantly reduce due to reduced travel time as a result of cleared traffic bottlenecks at junctions.

Worth to note by the general public in the City of Kigali especially users of the roads to be upgraded or expanded is that the works will cause inconveniences during the entire project time; as a result untimely blockages will be eminent.

The community is thus requested to use alternative routes available as will be directed by the Traffic Police along the sections as usual thus corporation and compliance will be highly appreciated.
