Governance and Family Promotion Campaign. The five weeks campaign is dedicated to a number of activities aiming at improving and changing people’s lives in all aspects with a special focus on children.

So far, a number of activities have been conducted to tackle issues related to children including teenage pregnancy, child labor, malnutrition, school dropout, children’s vaccination, birth registration, ECD services strengthening among others.

The activities include, identifying teen mothers and supporting them with basic needs, spread theearly childhood development services, distributing wheel chairs to children with physical disabilities, offering free measles and Rubella vaccinations as well as withdrawing children from child labor, bring them back to school and punish those who are responsible for child labor.

While launching the campaign in Kirehe District, on 11th October, 2017, The First Lady Mrs Jeannette Kagame reiterated the need of investing more efforts to improve children’s rights.

“Even though we have much to be proud of, this is a good opportunity to reflect on needs and challenges a child is still facing. Let’s provide them with all they need to grow and study well. We need to discuss with them about their education in order to address challenges they face before it is too late” She said.

In the meantime, it is not easy to elaborate the outcome of the campaign in terms of statistics as activities are still going on. However, the Government expects more outcomes from the whole campaign thanks to much effort invested and the integrated approach that is used.

According to Mrs Esperance Nyirasafari, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, the 2016 campaign led to the construction of 40 early childhood development centres across the country, school reintegration of 75% of children who dropped out of school, registration of more than six hundred thousand unregistered children while the National Prosecution Authority won 84% of the 411 defilement cases it took to court.
