Kick off of celebrations for the 23rd commemoration of Day of the African Child (DAC), International Day of Families and the Day against Child Labor

June, 13th, 2013 – The Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Service and Labour announce the starting of the celebrations for the 23rd commemoration of Day of the African Child (DAC), International Day of Families and the Day against Child Labor.

According to the Minister of MIGEPROF, Madam Oda Gasinzigwa, the government of Rwanda combines the three events mentioned above in order to achieve tangible results through pooled efforts of all relevant partners.

She added that, “after consultations with all relevant partners comprised of relevant public institutions, NGOs and development partners, this year’s 23rd DAC commemoration, International Day of Families and the world Day against Child labour are themed: Advancing Social integration in the family, eliminating domestic child labor affecting children”.

The Minister further said, the major objective of the celebrations is to collaboratively engage in fighting against child labor but after educating Rwandan community especially parents/guardians both women & men about the benefits of family social integration, dangers of child labor to children’s right to proper growth.
The celebrations will commence with the launching ceremony scheduled 16th June, 2013, in Mudende Sector of Rubavu District, followed by a number of community based activities, prominent ones include “Umuganda” for children as an enabling platform to deliver pertinent messages to children, of which they will carry home to parents, siblings and other family members in order to affect a shift in the young generation as a proactive means to eliminate domestic child labour and advance social practices within families and the community at large.

“Children Umuganda will be done concurrently with strengthening umugoraba w’ababyeyi aimed to eliminate child domestic labour and advance social integration within families,” said the minister.

The celebrations that will run for a week will end on 23rd June, 2013; closing ceremony will take place at Petit State of Remara with Child Care Open Day/Exhibition whereby all partners engaged in children rights protection and promotion will showcase their existing child care services, achievements and visionary planning in this field.
