Rwanda celebrated the Day of the African Child on this 18th June,2016 in Tabagwe Sector, Nyagatare District of the Eastern Province. The event was themed "Quality Education is a stable foundation for a bright future of the child" and activities were organized in a bid to call for action from parents, teachers and local leaders to create a conducive environment for the children's quality education. In that regards, the primary school of Shonga Cell was renovated, including an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Center that was established for the care of children under 6years in Shonga. Also, 200 pupils who had dropped out of school were given school materials to support them and encourage them in their studies.
The First Lady of Rwanda Mrs. Jeanette KAGAME, the Guest of Honor, urged parents in her remarks, to take responsibilities of raising children and protecting their rights; “there is no one else, no other institution will be able to take good care of our children as we would as parents. The main responsibility is ours." The First Lady emphasised that educating a child is the best legacy a parent can offer and should starts as soon as he/she is conceived. She invited all parents and other adults to ensure that all children grow in a conducive environment to secure their bright future. "Our children do not deserve to live on the streets or drop out of school. Let us raise them in families as ours." The First Lady stressed.
Together with officials present, including the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Dr Diane GASHUMBA, the UN Representative Lamin Manneh, the Governor of the Eastern Province Odette UWAMARIYA, the Mayor of Nyagatare District and others, the First Lady gave deworming pills to 100 children who were screened teeth, ears and heart related diseases. They also provided 10 cows to 10 families to support their wellbeing and seven best performing evening parents’ forum in Tabagwe Sector to set the model for others.
