The Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion and the National Commission for Children to host a network of celebrations under the theme, “young girls, we have agaciro”
- Rwandan Girls in high gear for the IDG
October 5, 2012; Kigali, Rwanda—Investing in young girls begins a series of changes far beyond her: for her self, her family and her community. That’s why the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl [IDG], to be celebrated annually.
On October 11, 2012, the National Commission for Children, in association with the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, will host a network of events and celebrations around Rwanda in honor of the IDG.
Girls’ potential is the greatest untapped resource for social and economic growth in Rwanda. But girls face unique challenges to realize that potential and contribute to Rwanda’s progress.
This year’s theme, young girls, we have agaciro, imbues in girls their value and important position in Rwandan society and progress. Investing in girls will greatly contribute to Rwanda’s realization of the Vision 2020.
To celebrate girls’ potential, the National Commission for Children will host 70 girls and boys, along with policymakers and decision-makers at Kigali Serena for an afternoon of celebration and commitments for investments in girls. The afternoon will also include creative opportunities for decision-makers to engage with and listen to girls.
Additionally, celebrations will be held around the country by PLAN International, Girl Guides Association, Imbuto Foundation, Akilah Institute, YWCA, and FAWE.
