Rwanda celebrating the” World Energy Day “for the first time

Kigali, 22nd October, 2013-Rwanda is among the signatories of the Dubai proclamation that was held under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AL Maktoun, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. According to the Dubai proclamation, the World leaders gathered at the opening Day of World Energy Forum 2012, and H.E Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda attended the Forum.

The World Energy Forum was hosted by the Supreme Council of Energy of the Government of Dubai, where the document was signed in support of World Energy Forum’s proclamation that the “World Energy Day” is commemorated annually on 22nd October to stimulate worldwide awareness of the energy issues and the political commitment and passion to support universal energy access that can benefit all nations and people.



The Government of Rwanda is looking to achieving the mission of the energy sector, access to safe, reliable, and cost effective energy supply as a basic pillar for economic development and improvement of standards of living for all households and to all economic sectors on a sustainable basis in order to attain the ambitious levels of growth defined under Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS II).

The “World Energy Day “will be celebrated under the theme:”Awareness Campaign on Energy Efficiency and Conservation towards the sustainable development”.

The current installed capacity is 110MW from Hydro power projects and even thermal generation. The projected demand is 563MW by 2017/18.

Government is also emphasizing the use of other sources of energy especially, Renewable energies such as Geothermal,Gas Methane, Solar PV, and Bio gas to eliminate the dominance of fossil fuels.

The Government is encouraging private sector to engage in Energy investment through public-private partnership to efficiently to promote energy for all and manage energy resources to meet even significant upturn in demand for decades to come.

The Rwanda celebration on World Energy Day “will focus on Four (4) major components; Inauguration of rural electrification in Gikomero sector- Gasabo District and proceed to Rwamagana in the Eastern Province. The electrification has led to a positive change by connecting many households in Six Districts of Eastern Province. Other activities that will be catered for include official launch of Biogas Loan program through UMURENGE SACCO in Kigabiro Sector and Nsinda Prison.

During “World Energy Day”, Solar PV program in Jinjagiro primary school will be launched, and creation of Awareness on use of energy efficiency products by large and small scale consumers through exhibitions.
