Minister Gatete calls for sustainable waste management services

Kigali 19th March 2019- In 2016, the Ministry of Infrastructure has developed the National Sanitation Policy to ensure the proper implementation of activities in the sanitation sub-sector.   The Policy outlines initiatives to overcome challenges and exploit existing opportunities in an integrated manner, and will effectively contribute towards achieving the goals of the National Development Agenda.

In this context, last Saturday, Minister of Infrastructure Hon. Claver Gatete held a site visit in Southern Province where he visited different sanitation facilities to ensure proper waste management.

Visited Projects include Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant and Modern Landfill in Nyanza District. The Minister also visited other landfills and composting facilities located in Kamonyi, Ruhango and Huye Districts.

To ensure proper operationalization, Minister Gatete toured different parts of aforementioned facilities and had discussions with District Officials and Operators to improve operational efficiency and maintenance of sanitation facilities.

Hon. Claver Gatete recognized efforts already made in terms of waste management and urged operators to invest more in waste management sector, acquire new technologies and adequate equipment that will enable them to accelerate efforts in recycling and composting of solid waste.

Local Authorities are also urged to assist operators in order to conduct proper waste management practices to make the waste management socially and environmentally more sustainable.

Minister Gatete has therefore reaffirmed the commitment of Government of  Rwanda to continue cooperating with and supporting operators and companies in order to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
