Professionalism in Infrastructure sector for Sustainable Development

Kigali, September 4th, 2015- In the framework of promoting professionalism and entrepreneurship in Infrastructure Sector, the Ministry of Infrastructure organized a one day meeting with all Engineers, Architects, and Civil Contractors. The meeting took place at Nobleza Hotel on 4th September 2015 and was officiated by the Minister of Infrastructure and the Chairperson of the meeting Honorable James MUSONI.

The meeting brought together both registered and non-registered engineers and architects to frame strategies and mechanisms to reinforce professionalism and entrepreneurship, but also enhance their collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure in exchanging ideas and priorities in pipeline.

The Minister for Infrastructure, James Musoni, has called on engineers, architects and civil contractors to collaborate to effectively build the technical capacity of the country’s workforce through ethical and quality professionalism to support the socio-economic development in infrastructure sector.
Musoni made the call on Friday while closing the Engineering Week, an event that brought together engineers as well as architects to forge collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure on how to reinforce professionalism.
Rwandan engineers take on only 30 per cent of the construction contracts, while 70 per cent of the contracts are taken by foreign engineers because local engineers are not considered skilled enough to execute the contracts.
The Government of Rwanda has prioritized infrastructure development and has been allocating almost third of its annual budget towards this purpose thereby meeting our Vision 2020 and its strategic agenda, EDPRSII. In a bid to sustain these efforts, equally efforts need to be mounted at technical capacity building and ethics of local professionals involved in infrastructure sector.
The meeting helped to build a clear database of all engineering and architectural professionals in the Country; this will further strengthen a well-coordinated and innovative entrepreneurship promotion.
